Samuel 'Smiling Sammy' Little was a used car salesman in Wahiawa, Hawaii who sold jalopies to the US Army men from Schofield Barracks before the invasion. He had a reputation for unscrupulousness before the Japanese came, as most of the cars he sold were defective, and his interest rates were as high as the law would allow. After Japan conquered Hawaii, many locals believed that Sam Little collaborated with them, even ratting on others as he always seemed to be happy and better fed than anyone else in town.

When the US Marines recaptured Wahiawa, Sam Little was caught and thrown into the lockup. After the United States liberated the islands, Sam was dragged before a mob who forced him to either run a gauntlet or to face a trial by the U.S. Army. Sam chose the gauntlet making it all the way to the end, bloodied and battered but still alive. His fate was rather timid compared with that of the gauntlet's next victim, Annabelle Chung who didn't survive.
