Remittitur is a ruling by a judge in a civil case (usually upon a motion to reduce or throw out a jury verdict) that allows the court to review the jury’s damacge award to determine if it is "grossly excessive, inordinate, shocking to the conscience of the court, or so high that it would be a denial of justice to permit it to stand." The judge may deny the motion, or it may lower the amount of damages granted by the jury either because the amount awarded exceeded the amount demanded or that the awarded damages are considered excessive.
