- Scale armor, sometimes called fish-scale armor, is made of metal plates sewn onto a leather vest in an arrangement identical to fish scales. The metal plates create a flexible, yet protective armor, which is only weak to an upward thrust that hits between the plates. It protects admirably against a range of attacks, however, a powerful blow from a sword, or a strong hit with an axe, mace or other such heavy weapon will penetrate.
