She and her sister Beulah were instrumental in creating the sorority's motto. After graduating from Howard University with a Bachelor's of Arts in English, Burke accomplished a graduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She taught in public schools in Pennsylvania and North Carolina. She helped to charter Xi Omega Chapter in Washington, D.C. She died in Washington, D.C..
