A prince of modest means wishes to marry the Emperor's daughter. He brings the princess two gifts; a rose that grows on his father's grave and blooms only once every five years, and has the sweetest smell one can imagine; and a nightengale which sings the most beautiful music. The emperor weeps at the nightengale's song, as it reminds him of a music box owned by the late empress, but the princess spurns the gifts as they are "natural" and not "artificial."

  • A prince of modest means wishes to marry the Emperor's daughter. He brings the princess two gifts; a rose that grows on his father's grave and blooms only once every five years, and has the sweetest smell one can imagine; and a nightengale which sings the most beautiful music. The emperor weeps at the nightengale's song, as it reminds him of a music box owned by the late empress, but the princess spurns the gifts as they are "natural" and not "artificial." The prince, meanwhile, disguises himself as a commoner and obtains a job as an imperial swineherd, tending the emperor's pigs. The prince creates a musical pot, which the princess hears him play, and immediately she desires it. After some haggling via one of the ladies of the court serving as a messenger, the princess agrees to the prince's price of ten kisses for the pot. She is quite satisfied with the musical pot. Soon thereafter the princess hears the swineherd playing a rattle which makes sounds even more beautiful than the pot. She sends one of her ladies, again asking for the price. The prince demands one hundred kisses. The princess initially balks at this demand, but soon agrees. The Emperor, meanwhile, notices the commotion near the pigsty as the princess is paying the prince with her kisses. Greatly angered that his daughter is kissing a swineherd, the Emperor banishes them both from the kingdom. The princess expresses regret she had not accepted the prince's offer earlier. The prince removes his disguise and reveals himself to be the man she spurned, and expresses his anger at the fact that she is content to trade kisses for toys while refusing an honest prince. The prince leaves her as she sings mournfully about her loss.
