Au Naturel was a racehorse who won a five o'clock race around the time of the Grand National. Despite being against odds of 100/1, Au Naturel won by six lengths beating one of the other horses French Pie. Martin, an experienced gambler, advised Bernard Black that he should bet on Au Naturel despite the odds because the horse prefers soft ground, its rider had eaten only minted peas for a month and he had tried to put his house on the race. Bernard, however, didn't listen and betted on French Pie, who did not win.
