Factories producing certain American goods, such as automobiles, were converted to produce war supplies; the manufacture of ammunition and weapons, as well as airplanes and other war paraphernalia, boomed. To my knowledge manufacturing jobs had to be filled by women during WWII; as the men had gone off to war, women had a multitude of temporary employment opportunities to pursue.
