Years into his isolation, he met Jemma Simmons, a S.H.I.E.L.D. scientist who offered him new hope after she had also travelled through the Monolith. However when Simmons was rescued from the planet by Leo Fitz, Daniels ensured her safety by battling Hive, losing his life in the process and having his body taken over.
