Chthonian is among the many demon languages that warlocks can understand, and one which Shadowhunters recognize as common. Shadowhunters try to understand at least a few phrases in its written in spoken forms, and even study it. Warlocks may speak this language when casting certain spells.

- Creatures truly at home in the Underworld, the Chthonians are dangerous and deadly puzzles for the Bound. Rumored to be the ghosts of inhuman races long dead and forgotten or the ghost of a slain Kerberoi, or even of long-forgotten concepts that no living creature can recall, are among the most alien and inhuman inhabitants of the Underworld. They seem to have no logic that a Sin-Eater can reliably predict: they follow urges only loosely related to survival and feeding. Even so, sometimes one of the Bound can achieve some kind of crude communication with a chthonian, particularly if the thing has devoured ghosts recently and is still assimilating their personae and memories.
- Chthonians are described as immense squids, with elongated worm-like bodies coated with slime, from the Cthulhu Mythos. Despite their squid-like appearance, Chthonians are land-dwellers and are even harmed by water. Chthonians are powerful burrowers, live for more than a thousand years, and are protective of their young. It is said that a chanting sound accompanies every Chthonian, and that by such they can be detected while underground and unseen.
- The chthonian is a core creature of the Dungeon in Might & Magic: Heroes VII. It is the upgraded form of the troglodyte.
- Even more so than other demons, they come in a wide number of shapes and sizes. Known types of Chthonian include Abyssal demons, Bloodveld, Nechryael and Penance and Virii, but other unusual creatures are likely to be Chthonian as well.
- "Chthonian" is a series of cards with the word "Chthonian" in their English card names. In the OCG, these cards had "Hell" 「地獄」 in their Japanese names, but not all "Hell" cards belong to this series. They were used by Chazz Princeton in the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime. The cards are thematically similar in art style and often utilize a control/beatdown strategy.
- The Chthonians were an ancient civilization of humanity that was responsible for both the creation of the hypergate network and the spread of humanity as a whole in the Teggedon Spiral. Little was known about the Chthonians except that they may have came from an alternate reality.
