The Kingdom of Spain came into being the day of 17 June, 1974, after a Civil War between the Monarchists and the Nationalists destroyed Spain. Armed guerrilla forces fought in the mountains, and many civilians grabbed arms to retake Madrid. Thousands of Spaniards ditched Franco's regime and joined the new one. The severe fighting between the two factions escalated to such heights, that Franco suffered a heart attack. His successor was happy to get rid of the problem, and created a Kingdom out of the areas that supported the monarchy.
