It took place at the Autodromo Carlos Pace on April 6 2003. The race was won by Jordan-Ford driver Giancarlo Fisichella with Kimi Räikkönen for McLaren-Mercedes in second and Fernando Alonso of Renault F1 in third. The race took place in very heavy rain throughout, and several drivers were caught out by the conditions. The conditions were so extreme that a river formed across turn 3, leading to numerous cars aquaplaning into the barriers. In the end, only ten cars were classified at the finish. On lap 55, the race was brought to a premature end when, following a crash on the final corner by Mark Webber which left debris strewn across the track, the Renault of Fernando Alonso, running 3rd, hit a stray wheel from Webber's car at high-speed, bringing out the red flag. Due to the damage to the walls and obvious danger from the weather conditions, the race director decided not to resume the race. Full points were to be awarded because at the last fully completed lap, the 54th, 75% of the scheduled race distance had been completed. Since the classification was to be reverted to that as of the end of the 54th lap, confusion ensued as to who had won the race. This confusion was amplified by Giancarlo Fisichella's Jordan bursting into flames in parc ferme. Initially, Kimi Räikkönen took his place on the top step of the podium, with Giancarlo Fisichella in second (Fernando Alonso, having been classified in third, was not present on the podium as he was receiving medical treatment following his crash). However, following a court case in which Jordan questioned the initial result, Fisichella was promoted to first place, with Räikkönen in second. A makeshift ceremony took place at the following race to switch the winning trophies.
