Together they murdered Vilaya's old rat aide, Dirva. Lugg was slain after Zwilt ordered him to kill a giant underground eel, and Gliv sought revenge upon the sable commander for her mate's death.

Together they murdered Vilaya's old rat aide, Dirva. Lugg was slain after Zwilt ordered him to kill a giant underground eel, and Gliv sought revenge upon the sable commander for her mate's death. Later, Zwilt and Vilaya had a vicious confrontation and Zwilt almost killed the Sable Quean. He thought he had actually killed her, and ordered Gliv to bury Vilaya's body. Hating Zwilt the Shade, Gliv saved the life of Vilaya instead. Gliv nursed Vilaya back to health--stealing her deadly poisoned dagger so that the sly Quean would not kill her. When Vilaya was fit to travel, Gliv took her to Redwall Abbey where Zwilt was making his attack, and disguised the Quean as a vermin Ravager. Vilaya secretly swiped back her dagger from Gliv and treacherously killed the stoat with it, claiming that Gliv was of no use to her anymore.
