The 18th and 19th centuries were a time of Portuguese Renaissance.In the 1750s Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, minister for Jospeh I of Portugal initiated British inspired reforms preparing the empire for industrialization. Later using raw materials from Brazil and Africa Portugal industrialized successfully before its contemporaries Spain and France.
