The squadron was named in remembrance of the Battle of Derra IV, during which a Rebel Alliance convoy bearing weapons and supplies meant for the new Echo Base on Hoth was massacred by an Imperial task force which included the 181st Imperial Fighter Wing. In 13 ABY, the squadron participated in the Battle of Adumar as part of a New Republic fleet sent to reinforce General Wedge Antilles' forces already stationed on the planet. During the battle, the Y-wings scored damaging hits on two of the Star Destroyers of the invading Imperial force.
