The piezoelectric effect was the generation of an electric field by crystals under stress. This effect was detrimental to the planets of the Selcundi Drema sector, notably Drema IV and Drema V, which both had high concentrations of dilithium cystals and suffered massive geological instability. The crystals, growing in unusually aligned lattices, were generating an electric field that had begun to tear Drema IV apart.

  • The piezoelectric effect was the generation of an electric field by crystals under stress. The fifth planet of Selcundi Drema shattered, forming an asteroid belt, during the the early 23nd century. Drema IV was on the verge of suffering the same fate in 2365, when the USS Enterprise-D eliminated the effect by launching class 1 probes equipped with harmonic resonators to shatter the crystals. (TNG: "Pen Pals" ) Piezoelectricity was also responsible for ripping apart the bottom of a dilithium mine in 2256, though it was not clarified that this was the exact same effect. "PI-zo" was the pronunciation for piezo from the script pronunciation guide. [1]
