The piezoelectric effect was the generation of an electric field by crystals under stress. This effect was detrimental to the planets of the Selcundi Drema sector, notably Drema IV and Drema V, which both had high concentrations of dilithium cystals and suffered massive geological instability. The crystals, growing in unusually aligned lattices, were generating an electric field that had begun to tear Drema IV apart.
