Noting Amidamaru's strength, Yoh gives him his original sword, Harusame, so that Amidamaru accepts his request to become his partner. Although both Yoh and Amidamaru try to obtain new partners, they only attract the attention from the shaman Tao Ren. Ren wants to take Amidamaru to aid him in becoming the "Shaman King", but Yoh denies. Therefore, both fight with Ren using the soul from the Chinese wujiang Bason. Both shamans manage to use 100% of their spirits' powers, but Yoh wins the fight.
  • Yoh and Ren make their final attacks. After the clash, both of the Oversoul fade at the same time, making both Ren and Yoh pass the preliminary rounds of the Shaman Fight. Matamune and Yoh go to Mount Osore to rescue Anna, and Matamune uses his last powers to transform into an enormous sword although he would never be able to return to his normal form once again. Although Ren feriociously attacks Yoh, all his attacks are blocked as Yoh uses Amidamaru's fighting experience to stop them. As Yoh takes the upperhand, Ren expands his Oversoul to overpower Yoh, who is weakened with every hit. However, Yoh continues avoiding all of Ren's attacks, causing him to anger, and starts losing his powers along with him. Meanwhile, Yun meets her father, Tao Yúan, and tells him Ren will lose.

One of the days Yoh is resting from his training, Tao Yun, Ren's older sister, confronts him in the city and summons her Jiang Shi, a former kung fu movie star named Lee Bailong. Having no weapons that Amidamaru is able to use, Yoh is overpowered by Bailong until Manta gives him Ryu's bokken. Using it, Yoh creates a vacuum that destroys the seal controlling Bailong's mind. However, Bailong goes berserk when he realizes he was murdered by the Tao family and attacks Yun. Anna summons the spirit from Bailong's teacher, Sha-wen, to merge it with Yoh. Tokagero soon arrives at Yoh and Anna's house and confronts them. Although Harusame is a present from Amidamaru's best friend, Mosuke, he decides to destroy it. Tokagero falls to the floor, as Ryu is not trained to merge with spirits. As such, Yoh allows Tokagero to possess him, but Tokagero is unable to kill him since it reminds him to how his mother used to trust him. Next day, Ryu apologizes to Yoh and Amidamaru for what he did, and Anna summons Mosuke's soul to possess Ryu so that he can fix the Harusame.

After arriving at his grandmother's house, Yoh meets Anna, but he is threatened by her. Yoh is then attacked by an Oni, but is saved by Matamune. • Yoh is tested by Silva, a member from the Patch Tribe, which is the one that oversees the Shaman Fight. Yoh is unable to hit Silva, who uses various spirits from animals to create weapons. Silva explains Yoh that what he is doing is to use his spiritual energy to combine the spirits with objects in a technique named Oversoul. Therefore, Yoh makes an Oversoul by merging Amidamaru with Harusame. With this, Yoh lands a hit on Silva and is allowed to enter the tournament. Yoh learns that his first opponent is an Ainu named Horohoro. Redseb tries to confront the Golem by himself, so that his father could recognize him and calm. However, he ends being saved by Joco, who has been revived by Sati from Team Gandara. Joco uses a new spirit along with Mic, and manages to fight against Golem without problems. The spirit from Joco's teacher tells Ren, Horohoro and Lyserg that Joco is using a new spirit named Pascal Avaf, a saviour whom Joco awoke while he was in hell. Before the final clash, Anna's guardians demons stop the Golem and Joco.

As the bear gets in touch with Horohoro, it is killed by a group of hunters, but Horohoro decides not to kill them. Horohoro returns with his group, and they go to investigate a ruin which may be related to the Patch Village. In the ruins, they are confronted by five of Hao's henchmen who want to test Yoh. As they rest from the fight, two patches allied with Hao, Nichrom and Magna, as well as three soldiers from Hao, Peyote, Turbine and Hang Zang-Ching, attack them, having been ordered to kill Mikihisa's team. As Mikihisa's teammates are also attacked, Ren allows him to leave to save them. Ren then finishes Peyote, and Team The Ren wins the first fight. In the following fight, Nile River Team faces X-I, one of the teams from the X-Laws. Although Lyserg almost kills his opponent, Anatel Pokki, he suddenly loses his Oversoul when he doubts about killing. Bill is defeated, causing Blocken to decide to attack Horohoro. Horohoro uses Icemen's spirit partners to fight Blocken and manages to defeat him. Bill tries to take this opportunity to kill the weak Horohoro, but he is defeated by Lyserg, who now uses an Archangel named Zeruel. Lyserg takes the Icemen and Horohoro to be healed by Faust, but he is followed by others soldiers. While Yoh's group escapes, Ryu is almost killed by Peyote and Turbine.
  • For the next fight Team Funbari Onsen faces the Icemen, a squadron from the northern parts of Europe. Before the start, the Icemen attack Horohoro and Joco, but are stopped by Ren. As the fight starts, Yoh creates a new Oversoul named Spirit of Sword by merging Harusame with another sword, but decides to rest until he is attacked. As such, Faust fights the Icemen, and creates an Oversoul that takes the form of a giant demon version from Eliza. As Faust overpowers the Icemen, they attempt to attack Yoh.
