Ontologism is the philosophy that each person as an intuitive vision of God, and that this vision is the source of all human knowledge. It originated with Platonic mysticism. Nicolas Malebranche (1638-1715) developed this theory further and Vicenzo Gioberti (1801-52) expanded on it. In 1861, Pope Pius IX declared on behalf of the Roman Catholic Church, that this docrine is erroneous.
