abstract
  • A federal general election was held in the Federation of Zardugal on Saturday December 13, 3338. All 750 seats to the 15th Congress of Zardugal were up for election, as was the Presidency and all five State governorships. Prime Minister Michael Dowdy was aiming to secure for his party a fourth consecutive congressional majority and a ninth term in office, the party having been the dominant party of government since 3323. Going into the election, it was expected that the party would have a difficult job in securing re-election after a decade and a half in government at a federal level. The right-wing Conservative Republican Party was seeking to return to power for the first time in almost two decades. Two years previously, they had elected a new leader, Jacques Chircac. In the event, Dowdy succeeded in winning his fourth congressional majority for the New Democrats. A total of 14 seats changed hands, but there was only a small and uneven swing of 0.3% from the NDP to the CRP across the Federation - the end result being that both parties gained as many seats as they lost. Thus the election was a perfect rerun of the election held three years previously and Dowdy became the first party leader in 107 years to win a fourth consecutive majority in the federal legislature, following in the footsteps of the Federal Republican Party's 3231 election win. At a regional level, the NDP was also successful in defending all four of the five State Governorships it had been defending and New Democratic President Karen Sosa was narrowly re-elected to a fourth and final term in office. Sosa won re-election by a margin of just barely a quarter of a million votes, the lowest share of the popular vote for winning candidate in half a milennium.
