| - The A-10 Thunderbolt was optimized as a close-air support attack aircraft. Its primary mission is to fly close to the forward battle area and coordinate with ground forces in the destruction of the enemy's leading elements. To this end, it is both heavily armed and armored. Its primary weapon is the brand-new Heavy Rotary Laser Cannon, carried in its nose. This upgunned version of the Rotary Blaster possesses enough power to blow through most vehicle armor almost instantaneously due to the effect of hundreds of shots impacting close together. The pilot must be careful to fire in bursts to avoid overheating the weapon at its maximum firing rate, however. External ordinance comes in the form of eleven hardpoints, eight on the wings and three on the fuselage. These hardpoints can carry a variety of armaments and equipment, although on the Thunderbolt this typically is ground-attack related. The craft is nimble enough to dogfight, but its slow airspeed, which is useful for strafing runs, places it at a disadvantage against faster starfighters and airspeeders. The Thunderbolt is armored with 0.5 meters of Class B Ablative Armor, allowing it to take dozens of anti-air laser hits without internal damage. The fighter also has rudimentary shields as well, though this is more to provide the pilot with a non-damaging warning of enemy fighters than offer true protection.
