She had six detentions on record and was in danger of failing her Algebra class. Kim was given a notice to take to her parents about the latter, but destroyed the first one, prompting school officials to send another, which Kim's mother Teri intercepted. ("Day 1: 4:00am-5:00am", Findings at CTU) Janet York, Kim's best friend, also attended SMHS, and had several disciplinary problems stemming from her hostility towards female teachers in particular. Janet had eleven detentions during her sophomore year, mainly for tardiness, and one for insolence to a member of the school lunch staff. The Vice Principal of Santa Monica High School wrote letters about both girls detailing their performance and activities for their personal files. These notes were provided for their dossiers for the House Special Subcommittee's investigation into the events of Day 1, when Janet was killed and Kim was kidnapped by operative working for the Drazen family. (Findings at CTU) After the death of her mother, Kim dropped out of Santa Monica High School to take a full-time job as Megan Matheson's au pair, and later obtained her GED Certificate in lieu of graduating.
