Twisted Tunnels is the fourth scenario in Conquest of the Underworld. Realizing that his nightmares are forcing him to face his darkest deeds, Tarnum decides to write down a confession of his greatest crime: poisoning his old friend Hardac and the other captains when they tried to convince him to go home and stop the war against Bracaduun. After telling them that he had been convinced, and that they could all go home, he handed them a poisoned goblet, then pretended to spill it on the ground when it was his turn to drink. He watched as they died, cursing his name.

| - Twisted Tunnels is the fourth scenario in Conquest of the Underworld. After writing down his confession, he buries it beneath a rock in some tunnel, so even he couldn't find it again. When he rescues some poor old woman from a hell hound's den, he realizes that she's a witch, and she tells him that the demon who stole Rion Gryphonheart's soul is called Jorm, and that he never stays in one place for long - he has too many enemies for that. If they seek out Duke Deezelisk of the Bottom, he can tell them where to find him. Queen Allison stayed behind on the previous level of the underworld, as Tarnum didn't want her to get killed, but she almost dies in an ambush after taking a small force to hunt magogs. Shaken by the experience, she writes to Tarnum for advice, and he tells her never to go into danger like that again. Keeping the Queen of Erathia alive is their top priority.

In order for Link to complete the Sand Temple he must conquer these three trials. The first is defeating a giant Rocktite, the second is navigating the Twisted Tunnels, and the last is the Sand Temple itself. When Link reaches the Twisted Tunnels on the Spirit Train, he finds that they consist of a complex labyrinth meant to confuse those who may try to traverse them; the Spirit Tracks split into an abundant amount of directions and Link must find the correct path to progress onward to the Sand Temple.
