The Galactic Alliance was one of two dominant galactic governments that succeeded the Galactic Federation Triumvirate in 538 ABY. After four centuries of lasting peace, the Triumvirate members agreed to return to their own sovereignty as the Galactic Alliance, the Galactic Empire, and the New Jedi Order. That peace lasted for another few centuries, until the Sith returned, took over the Empire, and launched the Third Galactic Civil War. The Alliance was overwhelmed by the Sith onslaught and lost most engagements, culminating in the fall of the Core Worlds and the Battle of Coruscant. During the battle, the government collapsed after Coruscant was left in shambles by the Sith attack. The Alliance was succeeded by the Alliance Remnant and, later, the Rebellion.

Like previous galactic governments, such as the Old Republic and the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances, the Galactic Alliance was a federal republic led by a Chief of State who presided over the Galactic Congress. Member worlds were given a significant amount of autonomy, with only major federal issues being dealt with at the galactic level. The Alliance maintained a military led by the Supreme Commander, as well as the Jedi during the Third Galactic Civil War.
