After being raped, her wild card turned and she drew a joker. She transformed into a sentient subway car but was eventually returned to normal by Dr. Tachyon. C.C. Ryder became reclusive, seeing only a few close friends. She avoids any situation that might be more than she could handle. Not even Dr. Tachyon could tell her what might set off the series of internal changes that could result in another transformation. C.C. must control her emotions, never allowing them to exceed a certain low level. If she takes the anti-depressants prescribed for her, she can't write. Not being able to create her songs is even worse than the prospect of changing again. In 1987, she took a chance that a small show would not affect her greatly and performed a comeback concert at the Funhouse AIDS/Wild Card Benefit with Buddy Holley.
