A disintegrator ray is an energy beam that destroys an object by disintegrating it to its basic components, which then disperse into the atmosphere. Ray gun is the generic term for weapons that fire disintegrator beams. It was invented by Thomas Edison and was used as Earth’s counter-weapon against the Martian "Heat-Ray" during Edison's conquest of Mars. This article is a stub. • The Disintegrator, also known as the Anti-Gluon Gun, is the Random Kingdom take on the Phaser of Star Trek fame, and one of a broad range of particle weapons. The Disintegrator fires a beam of particles which follows the general beam trajectory and is hence subject to ranged skill/accuracy checks, but moves at hitscan speed, allowing a target no evasion if it indeed is at the position fired at the moment the beam leaves the gun and it is incapable of temporal manipulation. Once the antigluons hit, they lead to the collapse of the strong nuclear and electroweak forces in any block of matter that is bound by these forces (i.e., the effect will not transmit to objects that are not fixed to each other, even if they are in contact with each other). The beam is reduced when in contact with matter and hence also slightly dissipates as it disintegrates the atmosphere through which it travels, however at practical ranges, the dissipation effect from travelling through low-density matter such as atmospheric gasses is negligible. The beam also damages force fields and nonbaryonic matter, but does so only at the rate of the particle stream's kinetic energy. Like pretty much all of the 'advanced' particle weapons, Disintegrators are not available to any of the Terran factions, but only to the New World Order of unified Terra.

The disintegrator gun’s first literary appearance was in Edison's Conquest of Mars (1898), the sequel novel to Fighters from Mars an unauthorized contemporary interpretation of The War of the Worlds (1898), by H.G. Wells: I had the good fortune to be present when this powerful engine of destruction was submitted to its first test. We had gone upon the roof of Mr. Edison's laboratory and the inventor held the little instrument, with its attached mirror, in his hand. We looked about for some object on which to try its powers. On a bare limb of a tree not far away, for it was late fall, sat a disconsolate crow. "Good," said Mr. Edison, "that will do. . . ." Instantly there was another adjustment of the index, another outshooting of vibratory force, a rapid up and down motion of the index to include a certain range of vibrations, and the crow itself was gone — vanished in empty space! There was the bare twig on which a moment before it had stood. Behind, in sky the, was the white cloud against which its black form had been sharply outlined, but there was no more crow. In the sequel, this was Earth’s counter-weapon against the Martian “Heat-Ray” from the The War of the Worlds novel.
