In normal space, due to relativity, it is virtually impossible to travel faster than the speed of light (299,792,458 metres per second) In order to travel to other star systems within a persons lifetime, methods of faster than light travel or FTL must be used. There are three known types of faster than light travel in the Farscape universe: * Hetch drive: a form of FTL held by nearly all ships. * Starburst: a faster but unpredictable form only held by Leviathans. * Wormhole: holes in space which can be flown through by certain ships.

Producing ultra-short photons can thus manipulate gravity, with revolutionizing space travel applications such as cheap anti-gravity launches. The problem that it would require high energy can be practically solved by concentrating several laser beams on a nanoparticle, heating it to locally extreme temperatures. An Alcubierre metric can be created by ejecting multiple nanoparticles from the craft and then beam perfectly timed laser beams on them (fire at the most distant first so that they are hit simultaneously), so each nanoparticle contributes a slower than light effect but together add up to faster than light, creating no discrete event horizon and thus no Hawking radiation.

  • Faster-Than-Light or FTL is a term that refers to the propagation of matter faster than the speed of light in a vacuum. In accordance with the Special Theory of Relativity, a particle (that has rest mass) with subluminal velocity needs infinite energy to accelerate to the speed of light, although Special Relativity does not mathematically prohibit the existence of theoretical subatomic particles that travel faster than light at all times (called tachyons). In the Warhammer 40,000 universe, FTL travel is the primary method of long-distance interstellar transportation in the known galaxy. The various forms of this advanced technology allows its users to traverse immense distances of interstellar space in a reasonable amount of time rather than the standard decades to centuries required by conventional, sublight propulsion.
  • Faster-than-light (also superluminal or FTL) communications and travel refer to the propagation of information or matter faster than the speed of light. Under the special theory of relativity, a particle (that has rest mass) with subluminal velocity needs infinite energy to accelerate to the speed of light, although special relativity does not forbid the existence of particles that travel faster than light at all times (tachyons). On the other hand, what some physicists refer to as "apparent" or "effective" FTL depends on the hypothesis that unusually distorted regions of spacetime might permit matter to reach distant locations in less time than light could in normal or undistorted spacetime. Although according to current theories matter is still required to travel subluminally with respect to the locally distorted spacetime region, apparent FTL is not excluded by general relativity. Examples of FTL proposals are changing the "frequency" of mass to a higher state by applying high-frequency waves of energy, the Alcubierre drive, and the traversable wormhole, although the physical plausibility of some of these solutions is uncertain.

However, ships of the Imperial_Navy, and some other ships, routinely travel from point-to-point within a period of time that would require travel much faster than the "Speed of Light." In the "Occupied Earth" constructed world, this type of travel is referred to as "Faster-Than-Light" or "FTL" travel, but that is just a convenient term for this type of travel. In fact, this term is technically inaccurate. The ships of the "Occupied Earth" constructed world travel using a system/engine/device/concept that is unknown to present-day human science. It is a fictional method of transportation, which is used in this fictional constructed world. It cannot be described to present-day humans, because they do not have the technology or scientific knowledge necessary to duplicate it or understand it. In the Occupied Earth constructed world, FTL travel is simply "the way that it is." It is a "plot device" that is essential to the existence of this fictional world, and should just be accepted as a fact of this particular fictional universe. No other explanation is implied or expected, regarding the nature of FTL travel in the Occupied Earth universe. The following items are accepted as Fact, regarding FTL travel in the "Occupied Earth" constructed world: 1) FTL travel requires a lot of power, and is normally only possible for ships which have combined length/beam/draft (length/width/height) dimensions of over 500 Linear Feet. There are exceptions... but small, fighter-like craft are NOT capable of FTL travel. 2) The maximum tested and known FTL "velocity" will allow a vessel to travel from one edge of the galaxy to the other in approximately 1.5 (1-1/2) years. 3) Exceeding the safe limits of a ship's FTL capability can result in the "disappearance" of that ship... permanently. The ship is essentially "Lost in Hyperspace." Once again, this is a concept that is not explainable using current human technology and scientific knowledge. 4) Transmissions (communications) are subject to the same limitations as the transportation of ships and other matter. In other words, it takes 3 years (1.5 X 2) to receive a reply to a question from the other side of the galaxy. 5) The nature of FTL travel in the Occupied Earth constructed world is such that there is no time dilation or other noticeable relativistic effects. For example, if a ship travels at FTL "velocities" or "speeds" for 4 months, then precisely 4 months will pass both aboard the ship and on any reference planet (assuming no other relativistic effects related to other phenomena).
