David grew up with a huge fondness for adrenaline sports and used to regularly compete in events such as BMX and Rally. It wasn’t until he was spotted by an Olympic coach at Pembre Ski slope that he finally decided on his career. David found the first few years difficult and even spoke about quitting. While his competitors spent hours each day on the mountains David had to resort to the dry man made slope of Pembre. As a result David placed last in almost every race and the gulf between him and his competitors increased. His family then decided to move to Saux Doux, Italy to further develop his talent David’s big moment finally come in the 2002 Olympic games. He won a Gold in the downhill where he broke the course record in a time of 1:26:56 almost a second quicker than the previous record. Achwaps also won the Silver in the snowboard cross and the Bronze medal in the cross-country ski event. After the success of 2002, the 2006 Olympics were a huge disappointment. Achwaps was heading for another gold medal when one of his skies dislodged unexpectedly and ended his race. Achwaps later explained his feelings: “Devastating, I can’t believe it. It’s a tough time for me. I’ve trained so hard for this but its just gone to waste” In 2006 David Achwaps became an ambassador for a number of charities including: Help for Heroes and the RNIB (a charity which helps support the blind) David Achwaps married his girlfriend of six years Emma Lewis in September 2009. They have three children: Their daughters Megan and Abby and their son Ricky. David currently resides in Vancouver, Canada where he is now running a successful chalet renting company. David has hinted that he may make a return to the Olympics in 2014.
