  • Infernum, created by the Great Being of the same name, is a correctional facility meant to replace the badly-damaged Pit. Following the Great Cataclysm, the Great Beings convened and discussed what to do with the sunken prison near Mahri Nui. It was decided that a second institution would be built, sturdier and tougher than its predecessor. The Beings drew lots and the duty fell to Infernum. He spent half a year designing the blueprints. Once complete, they were telepathically sent to the Order of Mata Nui engineers. The Order never found out that the Great Beings had a hand in the construction of the Prison. For eight years, the Order worked. The blueprints stated that the prison must have three floors, two underground, while the majority of the Prison would be above. In addition, the Prison must rest on an island and take up most of its land. Such specifications were rather hard to find, as few islands would allow for extensive underground facilities. At last, one of the Southern Chain islands was chosen and construction finally began. Teams of Toa were then sent to guard the Prison. Seventy-two, they numbered. A few were created specifically for guarding the Prison, but the vast majority were pulled away from their home islands, never to return. The teams of Toa lasted for only twenty-five years until the last of them either perish or lose their sanity. As the Toa were never heard from again, no one outside of the Prison knew of their fate. For two decades, the Prison was without guards, forcing Infernum to telepathically hijack the Prison, giving it a consciousness of it's own. Only then was a relative sense of order restored to the inmates. Though a sentient Prison made the already harsh life behind bars even more gruesome, it was all Infernum could think of. At last, the Great Being Infernum chanced upon an idea. He would create his own set of guards to replace the lost Toa. WARNING: Reading this spoiler will ruin much of the Madness Series for you. The early history of Infernum continues in Madness: Overture. Over two centuries later, the Cord between Voya Nui and Mahri Nui is shattered, completely razing the Pit. Infernum's Prison is now the only functioning Prison the Order has. And, at last, Spherus Magna is rejoined by the Great Spirit. The ensuing crash between planet and moons destroys the main floor of the Prison, freeing all of the inmates. Much of the first basement collapses as well, freeing the Fiends. Infernum remains empty for three years. Massive spoiler ahead. Highlight the text to read, if you wish.
