Garrim and Ferya Silverbeard found the elf boy in the arms of his mother, who lay dead on their doorstep, three orcish arrows in her back, over 300 years ago. They raised him as their own, as they had no children of their own, in the city of Ironforge. His elven name unknown, they gave him the name Thurimar, after Ferya's father; but at dinner one night, a close family friend commented on how, compared to the dwarf children, their adopted son "grew like a vine", and the nickname "Grovin" was born.

As elves live much longer than dwarves, Grovin was still a comparative adolescent when his father, and then his mother, each passed of old age; and, though very much welcomed, he had always felt an outsider among the stout and hearty little folk, and so he set out at a very young age to find his people, and moreso, the family of his mother, and his own identity.
