It is both the smallest in area and least populous municipality in Mariana. It is located near the locality of Prinsenberg, to the northeast. Penalmont is notable as none of the inhabitants speak either of Mariana's official languages, Dutch and English, but Barzuna, a Romance language related to Catalan once common in the country. The local mayor, Juan Martines Coll is the town's youngest resident, aged 51, and his aunt Hilda Coll is the oldest at 96. Penalmont has 10 buildings; six are in permanent use, three are largely abandoned and one is rented out to backpackers or campers.
