In the wake of the solars victory over the fae, many townsfolk came Grey Wolf's way (as they came to all the solars), hoping he would teach them some great, Immaculate secret overnight, and that they would stand as respected and praised warriors among their people. Of these, three were young boys who came upon him on the firing range as he drilled, eager to learn but lacking in will or disicipline. Grey Wolf looked upon them and knew they would abandon his training before they had learned anything of the Philosophy. And so, when they asked him to teach them the monks martial arts, he instead told them a story.

"A man traveling across a field encountered a tiger. He fled, the tiger after him. Coming to a precipice, he caught hold of the root of a wild vine and swung himself down over the edge. The tiger sniffed at him from above. Trembling, the man looked down to where, far below, another tiger was waiting to eat him. Only the vine sustained him. Two mice, one white and one black, little by little started to gnaw away the vine. The man saw a luscious strawberry near him. Grasping the vine with one hand, he plucked the strawberry with the other. How sweet it tasted! " The boys scoffed, shaking their heads, asking what the story had to do with martial arts or the powers of Essence. "That is simple." Answered the monk, turning his weapon to the firing range. With a single crack of the weapon and the deafening roar of a thunderbolt, the weapon unleashed a power it had never before revealed on the field of battle, blowing through the target and the wall behind, eventually landing in a field of pumpkins where it started a great fire, an explosion ranging beyond. "The first steps in an Immaculate's training are wisdom and hard work. If you take the time to deduce what the Koan means, I will teach you how to do that." Awed by the damage just inflicted, one of the boys asked: "And knowing this will make us wise?" "No." The monk answered. "Figuring out the Koan is the hard work. The wisdom will come when you realize your the ones fixing that damage."
