The Spanish Championship was first contested in 1923. It is known to have been held until 1926, before ceasing. A second division called the "Segunda categoria" was also staged in 1925. The championship was later restarted in 1953 and was held seven times until 1961. The Liga Nacional de Hockey Hielo was later created as the national league after another hiatus in 1972. During the 1950s and 1960s, Club Alpino Nuria won a total of four titles, FEMSA de Madrid claimed two championships, and Atlético Club de Madrid won once.
