Born into a military family, Takoda’s childhood was defined by his authoritarian and mostly absent father, Minko. | - Born into a military family, Takoda’s childhood was defined by his authoritarian and mostly absent father, Minko. The fourth of six brothers, Takoda was brought up by his mother and his eldest brother Koi. Although his childhood was happy, he always felt as though he was striving for an unachievable goal – the acceptance and approval of his father. It was this wish to please his father that drove him to excel as a youngster. Whatever he turned his hand to, he tried to be the best although he didn’t always succeed. Throughout his teenage years he worked hard at school in both written subjects and in sports. An intelligent child, he always did well in the classroom, but with a distinctive lack of natural ability in physical tasks, he had to work hard at his sporting subjects. At a very early age Takoda realized that he was different to some of the boys in his class; that he was a "Two-Spirit", a class of people in his tribe which exhibited both masculine and feminine traits. Revered in many tribes, they traditionally went on to hold important community positions such as healers, storytellers and counselors. Although in modern life this is no longer true, Two-Spirits are accepted as part of the Qua society and tend to take on more spiritual roles. Of course, Takoda knew that his father would not be happy with such a life and Takoda buried any sign of his sexuality or his attraction to other teenage boys to try and win his father’s approval. Once out of school, applying for a military career was a foregone conclusion and for the first time in his life felt as though his father might actually approve of something he was doing.
