Scoutmaster Atkins was the leader of a troupe of boy scouts in Doncaster. In 1990, the boys prepared bundles of old newspapers for collection by Derek Wilton from Pendlebury Paper Products. As Derek loaded the papers into the van, Atkins treated him as if he were one of his boys, instructing Derek on the correct technique despite Derek not needing the help. Full of pride in the scouts, Atkins snappily responded to Derek's complaints about the papers not being tied up properly by telling him he had boys like that to thank for keeping him in work.
