Johnson played for the hometown Minneapolis Millers from 1931 to 1934 and then the St. Paul Saints from 1934 until they suspended play in 1942. He was the plating-coach of the Saints in 1938-39. While with the Saints he was called up by the Chicago Blackhawks in 1937-38 and helped the team win the Stanley Cup. After leaving the Saints he played 1942-43 with the Hershey Bears and then rejoined the Blackhawks in 1943-44 for one season. Johnson played locally in Minnesota until his retirement in 1952. He was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 1974.
