Alex developed from an exttropical low that developed near the Bahama on January 7. 3 days later, Subtropical Storm Alex developed, which made landfall on Bermuda with 70 mph winds, before moving out to sea and becoming t seasons first hurricane the following day. On January 12, whilst approaching the Azores, Alex unexpectedly reached category 2 intensity, peaking at 105 mph in the process. 2 days later, Alex hit the Azores with 85 mph winds, becoming the only land falling Atlantic hurricane in the month of January. Alex weakened to a tropical storm on the 15th, before becoming extratropical with winds of 60 mpgh the following afternoon
