He started out in the junior ranks in Northern Ontario and then played on Ontario Hockey Association junior teams in Parkdale Canoe Club, De La Salle Academy, and in Woodstock, Ontario. Rodden then played for the senior teams Toronto Aura Lee and Toronto Granites, winning an Allan Cup with that team in 1922-23. He then spent three seasons with the Eveleth Rangers of the United States Amateur Hockey Association (1923-26). After starting the 1926-27 season with the Minneapolis Millers, he joined the Chicago Black Hawks in mid-season.
