Vodou is the name given to a number of religions based in North and South America and the Caribbean. They are syncretic religions which add Native American and Christian beliefs into the West African Vodon religions, and came into being as a result of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Notable Vodou religions include Haitian Vodou; Louisiana Voodoo; Cuban and Dominican Vudú, which are distinct though commonly conflated. The practices of the Sonido de Tortuga islanders have also been associated with the above.
