All Vito asked in return was that Bonasera pledge his loyalty and friendship to him. Vito eventually called for his favour to be returned; after the death of his eldest son Sonny, he asked Bonasera to use his embalming powers to restore the young man's bullet smashed face so he may have an open coffin at the funeral, and so his wife wouldn't have to see Sonny's face torn and ruined.
