DB Schenker Rail (UK), before 2009 known as English, Welsh and Scottish Railway (EWS), is a British rail freight company headquartered in Doncaster, England. The company was established as North and South Railways in 1995 by a consortium led by Wisconsin Central Transportation Corporation, and was renamed EWS the following year, following the acquisition of five of the six freight companies created by the privatisation of British Rail. (The only one it did not acquire, Freightliner, was bought out by its management.)
