The Brave series(勇者シリーズYūsha shirīzu) is a toy and animation franchise that began after toy company Takara had ended the animated "Generation One" storyline of Transformers in Japan. Following a decline in the series' popularity that led to the cancellation of the OVA series Transformers: Zone, Takara struck a cooperative deal with the animation studio Sunrise (known for its mecha series, most notably Gundam) to develop a new franchise and set of toy lines. The franchise, in fact, would play a key role in the reintroduction of the Super Robot genre to the Japanese mainstream in the 1990s, which was in a decline after Neon Genesis Evangelion's severe deconstruction of the genre.

The Eldran Series was started by a different toy company, Tomy. Following the success of the Brave Fighter Exkizer, Tomy also struck a deal with Sunrise. Tomy and Takara agreed to a merger in 2005 and became TakaraTomy and the Eldran Series is now regarded as being part of the Brave Series. A key difference between the Eldran Series and the Brave Series, is that they all revolve around elementary school students whereas, depending on the series, the protagonists of the Brave Series ranged from children, to teenagers, to adults. The series was very popular in East Asian countries. In 2014, the first entry in the series, Matchless Raijin-Oh received an English dub and dual-audio DVD release by Anime Midstream.
