Sam McLaughlin was an archaeologist with a weakness for Cuban cigars. While he had the appearance of a playboy, McLaughlin was a quick learner dedicated to his work and sought to be one of the best archaeologists in the world. By the time he was a graduate from St. John's University for three or four years, McLaughlin tended to find himself involved in whatever event was brewing around him. That saw him having to outrace Italian Fascists in the Yucatan jungles and witnessing the uprising in Morocco.
