She was dark and massive, with black hair, thick, black eyebrows and eyes of the clear, slaty blue of the gulf water in a north wind. She had a rather stern, forbidding look, but she was in reality very jolly, with a hearty, gurgling laugh and a deep, mellow, pleasant voice with a suggestion of masculinity about it." Ellen is depressed until Rosemary West pledges never to marry and to remain at home with her. 1906 - AGE 45 - Ellen attends the Pollock silver wedding and rekindles her friendship with Norman. 1907 - AGE 46 - Ellen marries Norman Douglas. 1908 - AGE 47 - Nephew Bruce Meredith is born, and is said to resemble his aunt Ellen more than his parents.
