Each of the Spelunkers have identical abilities; the differences between them are purely cosmetic and do not affect gameplay. Four are available from the beginning, but the remaining eight must be unlocked by fulfilling certain requirements. Unlocking all eight of the original secret characters earns the Achievement: 'The Entire Gang'. There are also eight additional characters who are unlocked by purchasing the Explorers DLC.

| - Unlock: Found inside a random Coffin in one of the four areas, only one character can be found per area. Break it open and this character may be found trapped inside, which you will unlock once she is released.
- Unlock: Found inside a coffin at the top of the Haunted Castle level.
- Unlock: Defeat Olmec and get to the exit.
- Unlock: Available from the beginning.
- Unlock: Defeat King Yama and get to the exit.
