In the alternate timeline of Montezuma's Revenge, the summit of the Spanish Empire was around 1730, when Spain controlled the whole Iberian Peninsula, most of the Mediterranean including southern Italia and the Barbary, the Middle East, the West Indies, Brazil, southern Africa, and the Philippines. Since that date, a series of inept monarchs, regional movements and pressure from other European powers led to a gradual disintegration of the Spanish empire leading to the current three Iberian republics (Portugal, Castile and Catalonia), and a series of independent states all over the world.
