He and his brother Amphidamas are counted among the Argonauts. The city of Kaphyae was believed to have received its name from Kepheus. Kepheus was said to be the founder of the town of Kyrenia in Kyprus.

  • In Greek Mythology, Kephéus (Κηφεύς) was the son of Aleus and Neaera or Kleobule, and brother of Amphidamas, Lykurgus of Arkadia, Auge and Alkidike . He and his brother Amphidamas are counted among the Argonauts. Kepheus succeeded his father as the king of Tegea, Arkadia. He had twenty sons (one of whom was named Aeropus) and at least three daughters, Sterope, Aerope (Daughter of Kepheus) and Antinoe. Kepheus and his sons joined in his campaign against Hippocoon, while Sterope was given by Herakles a lock of Medusa to protect Tegea in the absence of men. According to various authors, Kepheus lost either all or seventeen of his sons, and himself was killed in that campaign The city of Kaphyae was believed to have received its name from Kepheus. Kepheus was said to be the founder of the town of Kyrenia in Kyprus.
