Cuba declared its independence from Spain alongside other South American countries during the 1810s. It profited because of its sugarcane crops, but it was hit severely by the Great Depression. During this time, civil war broke out between Fascists and Republicans, and later, the communist faction entered. The Republicans won out in 1963, though Cuba is still plagued by terrorist attacks. It has never fully recovered, and is now one of poorest countries in the Caribbean.
