Rúmil was a marchwarden of Lórien, and was one who guarded the border of the western part of the forest, with his brothers. He was present at the Fellowship of the Ring's first meeting with the Galadhrim. Later, he and Haldir guided the Fellowship to Caras Galadhon. Rúmil spoke very little Westron and so could not really interact with the Fellowship when he and his brothers encountered them in the forest.

Il fit parti des rares Ñoldoli à ne pas suivre Fëanor lorsqu'il quitta Valinor pour l'Aman. Il existe également un Rúmil dans le Seigneur des Anneaux.

La majorité des récits paraissant dans le Silmarillon lui seraient attribués, de même que le Lhammas et l'Ambarkanta. Il existe également un Rúmil dans le Seigneur des Anneaux. Ce dernier est un Elfe Silvan de la Lórien, ayant un frère du nom d'Haldir, avec qui il surveille les frontières des terres de l'ouest. Il est présent lors de la première rencontre des membres de la Communauté de l'Anneau avec les Elfes de la Lórien et les guidera, en compagnie de son frère, jusqu'à Caras Galadhon.
