- A running gag in the Peanuts comic strip, is that inanimate objects are shown to have thought bubbles, and be able to express their thoughts. - A running gag in the Peanuts comic strip, is that inanimate objects are shown to have thought bubbles, and be able to express their thoughts. There are many examples of things which have been shown to do this. The most famous example is the school building, although there are many others, for instance, Charlie Brown's pitcher's mound has also been shown with a thought bubble. Although the reader is able to see the thought bubbles, the characters in the strip cannot hear, or understand the thoughts. The inanimate object, however, does understand what the other characters say, and can understand what is going on around it. Despite not being alive, the inanimate object can have character traits revealed in what it says. For instance, the school building can be very loving, especially towards Sally, and Charlie Brown's pitcher's mound can be shown to find him annoying, because he stinks at pitching.
