Avery worked as associate art director on two seasons of the comedy series Roseanne (1989-1991), as assistant art director on Spielberg's science fiction drama Artificial Intelligence: AI (2001, working with Harry E. Otto), and as art director for the re-shoot sequences on the crime drama Edge of Darkness (2010) and on the family comedy Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore (2010). He was also an assistant production designer on the television series A Different World (1990) and production designer on the thriller Right at Your Door (2006), the music comedy Taking 5 (2007), and the comedy Waitress (2007). Avery was twice nominated for an Excellence in Production Design Award from the Art Directors Guild in the category Feature Film – Period or Fantasy Films: 2002 for his work on Artificial Intelligence: AI, shared with Harry E. Otto, and 2003 for Minority Report, also shared with Otto. In 2008 he received an Excellence in Production Design Award nomination in the category Commercials for the live action sequence on the second Bee Movie trailer.
