Over 50% of Angel's viewers tuned in to watch this feature alone. The show details the ongoing trials of Angel, a vampire whose human soul was restored to him by gypsies as a prank. After more than a century of murder, rape and the torture of innocents, Angel's restored soul tries to torment him with a small amount of guilt and remorse. This does not stop him, however, from beheading, setting on fire, dismembering, crushing, stabbing and ultimately destroying anyone who ticks him off slightly. During the first four seasons of the show, he works as a private detective in Los Angeles, California, where he and a variety of ethnically diverse associates work to "help the helpless" and extort them for money. Typically, this involves doing battle with evil demons or demonically allied humans, primarily related to Wolfram & Hart, a typical law firm. He also has to battle his own human nature, which hinders him when he is force-feeding a lawyer or bureacrat their own intestines. Taking a Batman Begins approach to Buffy's Batman & Robin, the atmosphere of the show was darker, and at brief periods it managed to perform better than its parent series. These were usually the episodes that contained a special guest appearance from Sarah Michelle Geller.
- Angel is an American television series, a spin-off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It was created by Buffy's creator, Joss Whedon, in collaboration with David Greenwalt, and was produced by Whedon's production company, Mutant Enemy. It ran from 5 October 1999 to 19 May 2004 on the WB Network. Angel (played by David Boreanaz) is a vampire whose human soul was restored to him by gypsies as a punishment for the murder of one of their own. Since he had enjoyed more than a century of murder and the torture of innocents, his restored soul torments him with guilt and remorse. The character was first seen in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, providing assistance to its heroine in the series premiere. He became a regular on the show for the first three seasons, before being spun off into his own series, Angel, set in Los Angeles. During the first four seasons, he owns Angel Investigations. This is an idealistic detective agency, which he runs on a shoestring budget with a variety of associates. They solve supernatural mysteries and rescue the innocent. Typically, this involves doing battle with demons and their allies, rather than the vampires seen in Buffy. Many prove to be clients of the sinister law firm, Wolfram & Hart. In the final season of the show, Angel and his associates themselves take charge of the L.A. branch of the worlds-wide legal enterprise. Angel was initially told in an anthology format, with each episode creating a self-contained story that took place around the title character. Later episodes began to increasingly contribute to a larger storyline, which was broken down into complex narratives that unfolded over many episodes. While this resembles the structure of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel's annual plots were never resolved in the season finale. Instead, they segue into the following season, so that the overarching story crosses all five seasons of the series. It pits Angel as the central player in a battle between the Powers That Be and Wolfram & Hart, as he plays out his role in a prophesied apocalypse.
